A gentle starting point
Five ways to begin a family story.
A good interview does not need a script. Start with one easy question, listen for the detail that matters, and let the conversation take its time.

The conversation starters
Ask one. Stay curious.
These openers are intentionally simple. Give the answer room, then follow the detail that makes them smile, pause, or remember something new.
Start with a place
“What was home like when you were growing up?”
Invite details about the house, neighborhood, sounds, smells, or the people nearby.
Follow a favorite memory
“Can you tell me about a day from your childhood that you still remember clearly?”
A specific day often brings out more texture than a broad request for someone’s life story.
Ask about the people
“Who had a big influence on you, and what do you remember about them?”
Names, relationships, and small observations can help future family members understand the story.
Make room for change
“What is something you believed when you were younger that changed over time?”
This leaves room for reflection without asking the person to tell their whole story at once.
End with what matters
“What is one thing you hope our family remembers?”
Let the answer lead where it wants to go, and ask a gentle follow-up if they seem eager to continue.
After the conversation
Make the story easier to find again.
Preservation is a practice, not a promise. A few careful habits can help keep the context around a memory clear and give your family more than one way to revisit it.
Save the original
Keep the recording, messages, notes, or photos in their original form before editing or excerpting anything.
Label while it is fresh
Add the person’s name, the date, the place, and a short description so the context does not get lost later.
Organize by story
Use a simple folder, album, or family archive to keep related memories together and easier to revisit.
Keep a second copy
Back up important stories in another location or service, and check periodically that you can still open the files.
